Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in the first sessions?

The first one to two sessions are focused on building a shared understanding of your needs and goals. We’ll explore what’s bringing you to therapy, discuss any relevant background, and begin to develop a plan that feels right for you.

There’s no need to prepare in a specific way. For therapies like CBT, there may be between-session tasks to support your progress and reinforce what we cover. SFBT, on the other hand, is more focused on in-session conversation. What matters most is your willingness to engage openly and consistently.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes. Occasionally, we may run slightly longer if we’re working through a particularly significant moment or breakthrough.

Sessions are currently offered online, with in-person appointments in Wrexham coming soon. You’re welcome to choose the format that works best for you.

If you’re feeling nervous about the first session, you’re welcome to bring someone for support. Ongoing therapy, however, will be conducted on a 1:1 basis to maintain focus and confidentiality.

This varies from person to person. Some individuals benefit from 6 sessions, while others may work together for 12–20 sessions or more, depending on the complexity of the issues and the goals of therapy. We’ll review progress regularly and decide together what feels right.

Yes. Everything you share in therapy is treated with strict confidentiality. The only exceptions are where there is a legal obligation or a concern about your safety or the safety of others, in line with safeguarding guidelines.

Sessions are usually held weekly, which supports continuity and momentum. Some clients prefer fortnightly sessions, which can be discussed based on your preferences and needs.

Theracare supports clients with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, low mood, trauma, identity exploration, low self-esteem, emotional regulation, relationship challenges, neurodivergence, and cross-cultural stress. If you’re unsure whether your concern is suitable for therapy, you’re welcome to get in touch for an informal discussion.

That’s completely okay! Many people need to find the right fit, approach, or time. We’ll take the process at your pace, and you’re encouraged to bring in past experiences so we can understand what worked, what didn’t, and why.

Therapy can sometimes bring up strong emotions, and that’s completely normal. You won’t be judged or rushed. We’ll go at a pace that feels manageable for you, and I’ll help you build tools to feel grounded and safe both during and after sessions.

Theracare draws on evidence-based models including CBT, Mindfulness-Based CBT, DBT, SFBT, and person-centred therapy. The approach is always adapted to suit your unique needs, preferences, and goals.

Yes. Psychological assessments, including cognitive testing (WISC-V), autism assessments (ADOS-2 & ADI – R), and risk assessments (AIM3 and AIM-U12) are available. These can be used for education, clinical understanding, or formal reporting. Please enquire for suitability.

Yes. You’re not locked into therapy. We’ll regularly review your progress and check in on how things are going. If you feel ready to end or pause, we’ll ensure there’s space to reflect and close safely.

A limited number of concessionary slots/sliding pay scale may be available based on personal circumstances. Feel free to enquire in confidence.

“Not Sure What You're Feeling?”

Sometimes it’s hard to put your finger on exactly what’s going on. You might not know if it’s anxiety, depression, or something else. You just know you don’t feel okay.

At times, it can feel like your mind won’t switch off… thoughts racing, looping, or spiralling. You might feel distant from yourself or others, as if you’re just going through the motions. Perhaps you’re carrying a sense of tension in your body, always bracing for something, or feeling overwhelmed by vivid memories that come without warning.

At Theracare, you’re not expected to arrive with a label or diagnosis. During the assessment process, we’ll work together to understand what you’re going through and explore which therapeutic approach is most appropriate for your needs.

If something doesn’t feel right — that’s reason enough to reach out.

“Struggling to Stay Safe?”
